Lowering standards to permit psychologists to prescribe medications is not the way to address the access to care concerns in Ohio. Individuals who have mental illness (including substance use disorders) deserve the same safe, high quality, health care as we demand for other medical conditions. Contact your State Representative in the House and ask that he or she oppose efforts by psychologists to practice medicine via the legislature. Insist that psychologists who want to prescribe be required to obtain no less than what is required of other non-physician behavioral health prescribers, including psychiatric advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) - not just in hours but in content, including prerequisites.
